Millions of families these days are finding that they cannot afford their expensive cell phone plans. However, these families may be able to get free cell phones for low income families instead.

Having a cell phone is almost an absolute must these days. A cell phone could be the deciding factor between life and death. Say for example, you were involved in a car accident. You could immediately use your cell phone and call for help.

Not just anyone can get free cell phones for low income families. Your family has to be considered low income in order to get these phones. You are probably eligible for free cell phones if your family participating in government social programs such as food stamps.

These free cell phones have a certain number of minutes that your family may use every month. Typically it is about an hour of talk time. If you want to go over the limited time then you have to buy more minutes.

Each year you would have to establish that you still qualify for free cell phones. If you do not qualify under low income then you would have to start paying for the cell phones if you plan on using it.

In order to sign up for free cell phones for low income families, find a carrier in your state that offers it. Submit the appropriate documents and you should get your free cell phone. Some states might not have this service yet so be sure to check.

You would have to be careful of your usage of your free cell phone. Since the minutes are limited each month it is very possible for you to use up all the minutes. You can easily check the number of minutes you have left on your phone to keep track.

The minutes that do not use in one month may be rolled over to the next. This depends on the cell phone company. Contact them to find out what their plan offers.
